Scholarship scheme to continue
The One-District-One-Scholarship programme funded by profits from digit lottery sales will be continued, government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said during a TV show this morning. "There will be no changes on this because government sees it as a good programme," said Mr Yongyuth on "Direct from Government House" which aired on government-owned Channel 11 and numerous radio stations for the first time today for an hour. The scheme, initiated by the Thaksin administration, provides funds for youth throughout the country to study locally and overseas. It is now sponsoring the third batch of students. There will be one change despite Mr Yongyuth's assertion, because lottery funds are no longer available. He said funding for the scholarship would come from the mid-year budget of the government.

Nine locals compete in Chugiak-Eagle River Scholarship Pageant
Summer Snodgrass, 17, was crowned Miss Chugiak Eagle River at the 2007 Chugiak-Eagle River Scholarship Pageant Saturday at Chugiak High's Steve Primis Auditorium. The theme of this year's pageant was "Brains, Beauty and Beyond," said event director Alisa Parrent, adding that Snodgrass performed a violin solo and based her service platform on breast cancer awareness in pursuit of her title. Parrent said nine women from the Chugiak-Eagle River area participated in the pageant and earned a variety of titles and recognition. Michelle Wilkins, 20, who performed a lyrical jazz dance and encouraged youth involvement in extracurricular activities as her platform, was crowned Miss Birchwood 2007, she said. The Miss America Organization also offers an Outstanding Teen program for girls ages 13 to 17, Parrent said.
Harbaugh hired by Stanford
After a two-week search, Stanford hired former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh on Monday to coach its football program, an athletic department spokesman said. Harbaugh, 42, comes to Stanford with 15 seasons of NFL playing experience and a wealth of football knowledge, having been raised by a longtime college coach. But the former Palo Alto High standout has spent only three seasons as a head coach, all at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division I-AA school. Not a problem, said former Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett. "I think it's a good choice," said Plunkett, the 1970 Heisman trophy winner. "I think the way he carries himself, he commands respect. He's an easy guy to talk with, an easy guy to get along with. I don't see any problem with him relating to kids." Stanford will introduce Harbaugh at a 2 p.m.
MDC scholarship honors Range
With the passing of M. Athalie Range, our community has lost a pillar of strength and understanding. She lived her life with passion and dignity and inspired countless members of our community. I am fortunate to count myself among them. She has left us a legacy of equity and fairness. Everything she did spoke to the value of opportunity. She believed in the gifts within each person and strived each day to provide people across our entire community the simple chance to succeed. Range once said, ''Education stands at the apex of everything.'' She knew that learning could change a person's life. In her memory, Miami Dade College is establishing the Athalie Range Scholarship to continue the work of one of South Florida's greatest citizens. It has been a privilege to know her, and MDC is honored to establish this tribute in her name.
