CU-Boulder Awarded $80,000 Grant To Enhance Nontraditional Student ...
The University of Colorado at Boulder will expand a need-based scholarship program designed to attract and retain non-traditional students through an $80,000 Daniels Opportunity Scholarship grant from the Daniels Fund beginning in 2007. "We are deeply honored to be awarded our second Daniels Opportunity Scholarship," said CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson. "This grant will increase access to students who historically have struggled to overcome financial barriers to a college education. As a result, we will be able to double the number of worthy students who can realize their academic goals at CU-Boulder," Peterson said. Recruitment efforts will target adult learners, GED recipients, foster care youth and returning military personnel. A committee will select the scholarship recipients who will participate in academic neighborhood programs and student clubs and organizations, besides regularly meeting with key program faculty.
Stanford hires Harbaugh
UNDATED Stanford is handing off to a quarterback, hiring Jim Harbaugh to take over its struggling football program. The former N-F-L signal-caller has spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division One-Double-A program. He led the Toreros to a 29-and-6 mark that included wins in 27 of his final 29 games. Harbaugh takes over a team that set a school record for losses this season, going 1-and-11 under Walt Harris. The Cardinal have won just 16 games in the past five seasons under Harris and Buddy Teevens. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Scholarship funders left in dark
A Long Grove, Iowa, couple waited almost three years to find out what happened to the more than $2,700 they gave to Scott Community College to set up a scholarship in their late son’s name. Those answers finally came this week when James and Laura Huffman received a letter from Thomas Coley, the college’s president, in which he apologized for what college officials described as a miscommunication and informed the couple that the first scholarship recipient was selected in the spring."It’s just one of those things that fell between the seams," said Alan Campbell, spokesman for the Eastern Iowa Community College District, which includes Scott Community College. The Huffmans used donations given to them after their son, Gregory Huffman, died in an ATV accident during 2003 to establish an annual $250 scholarship for a second-year student in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning program at Scott.

Gun sports drawing more women
Each had her own reason for pulling the trigger. For Gabriel Hrysenko, it was the hope of a scholarship. Caron Brooks was searching for a sport that did not aggravate her back. Meryl Boyd wanted to spend time with her husband. Lori Cullen was looking for camaraderie. And three generations of women were continuing a family tradition. Now they are all hooked on target shooting. "You can't walk away. . . . It's like a passion," said Cullen, 43, a single mother from Freehold. The Shore area residents shoot at the Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson and are part of a growing number of women across the nation infiltrating a sport long dominated by men. "It's a trend," said National Rifle Association spokeswoman Mary Sue Faulkner.
Grad requirements hinge on college prep
Students in Kalamazoo Public Schools will be required to take a college-readiness course and the Michigan Merit exam in order to receive a KPS diploma, under proposals being reviewed by the Kalamazoo school board. The board is expected to formally adopt new graduation requirements at its Jan. 11 meeting. Those changes will incorporate the state's new graduation requirements. Legislation passed last spring mandates four years of math, including Algebra II, and three years of science, including chemistry or physics, beginning with the Class of 2011. The law also demands that students take an online course during their high school career. To fulfill that requirement, KPS officials designed a new course for sophomores titled College Readiness that will include career exploration; an online preparation course for the ACT college-entrance exam; and education about the college search, selection and admission process, as well as practice in writing college application essays.
