Harbaugh to Become Stanford Coach

Stanford hired former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh to take over its struggling football program on Monday.

Harbaugh had spent the last three years as head coach at the University of San Diego, a non-scholarship Division I-AA program. He led the Toreros to a 29-6 record, winning 27 of his final 29 games at San Diego.

Now he has the tough task of turning around the Cardinal, who set a school record for losses in a 1-11 season this year that led to the firing of coach Walt Harris. Stanford has won just 16 games in the past five seasons under Harris and Buddy Teevens. .

A Creative Flair Rising in Lawsuit Settlements

In March 2005, Eva Rowe's parents, James and Linda, were killed in a BP refinery explosion in Texas City, Texas -- a disaster that killed 13 others and injured 170.

She sued the company on behalf of herself and the estates of her parents. Last month, her attorney struck a settlement that has a rare twist: More than $32 million is not going to Rowe.

BP Products North America Inc. pledged $32 million to five medical and educational institutions. The deal also includes as much as $6 million in additional matching funds. Arenazas v. BP Products North America, No. 05- CV-0337 (Galveston Co., Texas, Dist. Ct.). Rowe received a confidential settlement.

Civil actions ending in creative settlements that do more than put money into the pockets of plaintiffs and their lawyers are unusual, but attorneys are starting to see more of them.

Need Scholarship money? Boston University Young Republicans ...

The group, Boston University College Republicans, told campus publications the $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship was intended as a statement and they had raised funds privately for the award, which does not have the backing of the university.

"We think giving out a scholarship based on any race is crazy," Joe Mroszczyk, president of the group, told the college's BU Today Web site.

Of all the groups to do this... why am I not surprised its a Republican one?

I understand the debate regarding "what is taking affirmative action to the point of reverse discrimination" only too well. Just recently on the ballot this month was a measure asking about it.

Would they be protesting if it was somthing like, say, scholarships to the child of a veteran? I've seen those around a lot. THere's so many scholarship sites adn opportunities, even OUTSIDE the school designed ones, even if the competition is fierce, that it seems like theres other ways to go about getting money. Maybe if we brought the FEDERAL financial aid packages up to the times....j

I really wonder which caucasian students will APPLY for this scholarship!

At any rate, college is unaffordable for pretty much EVERYONE right now, so i see why people might be eyeing other peoples scholarships jealously. But as unnaffordable as it is to a middle class white family, its even MORE unaffordable to students of many other ethnicities. So I stand with the school in encouraging diversity on their campus.

Coles College of Business Professor Awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Atlanta - James G. Tompkins IV, Ph.D., a professor at the Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University, has been chosen as a Fulbright Senior Specialist to Greece. The Fulbright program is the U.S. governments flagship international educational program. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and residents of other countries. He is the third Coles College faculty member to be honored as a Fulbright Scholar. I think the Fulbright scholarship will help with my teaching because I often bring experiences outside of the university into the classroom and my research, Tompkins says. Tompkins teaches Corporate and International Finance in KSUs Department of Economics, Finance & Quantitative Analysis. As part of his Fulbright scholarship, he will teach and conduct seminars on writing and researching case studies at the University of the Aegean from mid-March to mid-May.
