Pitt Honors College student awarded Marshall scholarship

A University of Pittsburgh Honors College student has become the only student at a Pennsylvania college or university to win a prestigious Marshall Scholarship this school year.

The student, Anna Quider, a native of Grand Island, N.Y., is majoring in physics and astronomy, the history and philosophy of science, and religious studies. She is one of 43 winners nationwide this year and the ninth Pitt student to have been selected a Marshall Scholar.

The Marshall Scholarship was created by the British parliament to honor U.S. Gen. George C. Marshall.

Winners may attend any British university on scholarship for two or three years of study toward a degree. Ms. Quider plans to do graduate work in astrophysics at Cambridge University.

"Anna combines vast technical ability in physics and astronomy with an unbridled enthusiasm for science literacy and outreach with young children," said Alec Stewart, dean of the Honors College and Pitt's Marshall representative.

While many funding options for prospective MBAs are available, from parental help to formal loans, scholarships consistently rank as a top expected source of finance for candidates around the globe.

According to the QS Topmba.com Applicant Research report for 2006, which surveys over 5,000 MBA candidates across the world, Central European, Middle Eastern, and African applicants rely the most heavily on scholarships.

Senate Passes Increased Merit Scholarship

High school students could be getting the opportunity for some scholarship money to put toward college. That's because the state senate passed the expansion of the merit scholarship award.

The scholarship will provide up to $4 to every eligible student who wants to earn a college degree. Beginning with this year's high school seniors, every student will have the opportunity to earn half the scholarship by doing well on assessment tests, and then students can get the other half of the scholarship by successfully completing two years of college.
