Tony Purnell, the former team principal of the Jaguar Racing and Red Bull Racing Formula One teams, has been appointed as a Technical Consultant to the FIA.

Purnell's main role will be to assist the FIA in developing Formula One technologies that will be road-relevant and which will help to improve the racing on the track. Working closely with FIA Technical Consultant Peter Wright and Head of the FIA Formula One Technical Department Charlie Whiting, Purnell will liaise with manufacturers, oil companies and key universities to identify the latest trends in vehicle technology developments.


'Renegade' nurses start scholarship for community college students

The Oregon Coast Community College Foundation will soon have a new student nursing scholarship, thanks to Teresa Watts and Nancy Steurer.The two ladies, who are nurses, are working their way away from bedside nursing, according to Watts, who said, "We feel we need to help educate our replacements so we decided to start a scholarship for nursing students at Oregon Coast Community College."

Tackle Lanis returns despite pain

With his left forearm looking as if it is wrapped a gigantic marshmallow, UCLA strong-side tackle Aleksey Lanis returned to practice Tuesday in preparation for the Dec. 27 Emerald Bowl against Florida State.

And, yes, Lanis was in quite a bit of pain.

He sustained a broken ulnar bone in his left forearm on UCLA's last offensive play of the USC game, but plans to start against the Seminoles.

"I'm hoping it gets a little better and I get used to this cast," Lanis said. "I'm trying to keep my hand from being pushed back. My wrist is still a little tight, but it's been in a cast for the last two weeks."

Lanis, a red-shirt freshman who started every game and was a second team CollegeFootballNews.com all-American, said the pain is something he must work through. But it is not the type of injury that should keep him out of the lineup.


Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Opens National Graduate Scholarship ...

LANSDOWNE, Va. – The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is now accepting nominations for its Graduate Scholarship Program, one of the largest and most competitive scholarship programs in the country. College seniors at more than 2,000 accredited institutions in America, and alumni who have graduated from those institutions since May 2002, may compete for the scholarships, which can total as much as $300,000 (up to $50,000 per year for up to six years).

The Foundation will award the graduate scholarships in early summer 2007 for use during the 2007-2008 academic year, and will renew each award in subsequent years based on performance. Last year, the Foundation awarded 76 of these scholarships. A panel of national experts will assist the Foundation in selecting scholars. Candidates for the scholarship must be nominated by the faculty representative at their undergraduate institution.


Scholarship for Standard IX student

S. Sai Visesh, a Standard IX student of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, has been awarded a four-year scholarship by Raffles Institutions, Singapore, till Standard XII. He is one of 105 students selected from the Chennai region selected to receive the scholarship. Sai has been receiving general proficiency prizes since he was in Standard I, and has been doing very well in mathematics, often scoring centum in the subject. Students of Sindhi Model Senior Secondary School have compiled select articles from The Hindu group of publications into a scrapbook. Most of the articles chosen are on science and technology. Students have named the collection `The NIE (Newspaper in Education) Reference Album'. Nursery teachers of the school recently put up a special puppet show for differently-abled children.


College coaches speak out

The Head and Assistant Track and Field coaches from Oral Roberts University are currently here in New Providence. Joel Dial, Head Coach, and Chris Brown, assistant, hosted a forum at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium last night for senior high school athletes and first-year college athletes. Bahamian quarter-miler Andretti Bain, who is in his final year at Oral Roberts, was also scheduled to be in attendance last night.

All three of them were hosted by the Bahamas Scholarship Foundation for Student Athletes, and are expected to be on hand again tonight as the Bahamas Association of Athletics Associations (BAAA) releases its names for consideration for the Junior and Senior Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards.

Holsinger-Fuchs appointed to associate vice chancellor at UMC

Pam Holsinger-Fuchs has been appointed associate vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). In this role, she will work to ensure coordination and integration of traditional student affairs services with academic programs and support services to enhance and support student learning. In conjunction with academic affairs, she also will provide leadership in the planning, coordination, promotion and evaluation of recruitment, retention and graduation of students.Holsinger-Fuchs came to UMC in 1996 as director of student activities and service learning, working in this capacity until she was appointed interim vice chancellor in 2005. In her role as associate vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management, she will continue to serve as a primary resource for students, faculty, staff and the general public for enrollment and student affairs for the campus.
